A Southern Bridal Shower

Post Author: Angela Sagabaen

Although I’m an American and have lived in the United States my whole life, there are just local regional differences that find me and leave me in awe. As some of you may already know, I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. I lived in NYC for two years before moving to New Orleans. I’ve enjoyed the different experiences in various states that I’ve visited, which only makes me long for world travel even more. And just when I think I’ve seen it all in the South, it’s the little things that remind me how special and unique this area is - New Orleans, Louisiana - and the different parts that make up this country as well.

I attended my boyfriend’s, future sister-in-law’s, bridal shower this past weekend in Ville Platte, LA, which takes about 3 to 4 hours by car and is NorthWest of New Orleans. Some have referred to it as “Cajun Country.” As I made my way towards the red brick home, using only the balls of my feet so my heels wouldn’t sink into the yard, I touched base on wood floors and was greeted with true southern hospitality -  smiling faces, directions on where to put my purse, where the bathroom was, where to get a drink and have a few bites - this sounds like the status quo, but Louisianans do it with a flare that I can not explain. The house was filled with fresh flowers and adorned with crystal and silver everywhere.  The young bride and bridesmaids were dressed beautifully and it took me back to a time of what it was like to see Southern belles a hundred years ago, just in a different fashion.

I posted some photos to give you a sense of the bridal shower.

So cool! I am Julie’s mother and wanted to say how nice it was to meet you. Beautiful day with dear friends helped make Julie’s Bridal Shower a wonderful event. The silver estate coffee piece is from New Orleans and was given to Julie’s grandmother by her godmother as a thank you for help after Hurrican Katrina. My dear husband polished the piece for his daughter just in time for the shower! Thank you again for taking the time to write about our day! Family, friends and food are all a part of our culture and heritage. Please come visit again!

Angela, I’m Nina’s good friend Pam McGee and attended the shower. How wonderful of you to paint us in such a wonderful light! We’re not used to getting such flattering comments about our social gatherings. We’re quite a special and unique people here and it’s nice to be reminded of that every now and then. Thanks again for your kind portrait of us. We’d love to show you more of our hospitality in the near future. Keep in touch!! Pam

The bridal shower is lovely. The cake is wonderful. Congratulations to the bride and groom and to the author of this delightful description of a formal but comfortable bridal shower in the South.
