Food Stamps and NYC Farmer’s Markets
Post Author: Jenny McCoyWhile reading a local paper a few days ago, I stumbled upon a full-page advert about how several New York City farmer’s markets are now accepting food stamps. And as I perused the stalls at my neighborhood farmer’s market this morning, I thought about how the produce I was purchasing was far superior than what my local grocer had to offer, but with a lesser expensive price tag. It really feels good to be able to eat healthy foods and save money while doing so. Kudos to NYC for making this more available to everyone possible!

Jenny,
The Crescent City Farmer’s Market also accepts EBT (electronic food stamps).
See excerpt below:

In 2005 we began accepting EBT cards in exchange for EBT tokens, which work almost like our market tokens, with a few exceptions due to government regulations: no change, no hot food, no knife sharpening, no cut flowers and no inedible plants. Like market tokens, they’re accepted by all of our vendors, and they never expire.

That’s great! I didn’t realize NOLA’s farmer’s markets accepted EBT cards as well. I suppose this is something that is happening nationwide, which is wonderful because absolutely everyone should have access to buying food directly from its farmers!
