Yoyos
Post Author: Jenny McCoy
Ordered as an appetizer, but better as a dessert, the Venezuelan version of arepas called “yoyos,” that I had recently was really great! They were filled with caramelized sweet plantains and a mild white cheese that was similar to mozzarella. But, what made them dessert-like was the dough used, which was sweeter than usual and seasoned with cinnamon before being deep-fried. They tasted like banana French toast!
Arepas are mostly popular in Columbia and Venezuela (although I have had a Puerto Rican version). They are made from a flat patty of a cornmeal-based dough that is baked, fried or grilled. Their texture is similar to a chewy English muffin, and they split easily like a pita, making them perfect for stuffing.
I’ve never made them myself, but I have seen them pre-made in South American grocery stores here in New York City. If you ever stumble upon them yourself, I suggest purchasing them and stuffing them with your favorite sweet or savory fillings. For instance, spicy stewed chicken meat with fresh salsa and Chihuahua cheese would be delicious! Or maybe sautéed chorizo and onions with fresh herbs and avocado slices would be even better!
