Eating Cheap
Post Author: Lorin GaudinNo, it’s not particularly posh, but the concept - shopping, cooking and eating foods made from 99cent stores - is smart, intriguing, budget-minded. New Orleans doesn’t have one of these incredible 99 cent Only Stores with all the great prepared, frozen and other foodstuffs, so when I got a copy of this book, I tried to adapt by going to “dollar” stores. That was an abject disaster as the decent jarred, boxed or canned foodstuffs were extremely limited and anything frozen was an exercise in salt and chemicals - ick. Nonetheless, this book and the idea behind it are spectacular. I wish we had one of these stores, they look really cool and as food-costs rise, it just makes sense cents.

Emeril, you’ll just have to move out here to L.A. and enjoy the stores with the rest of us…
Besides, we don’t have one of your restaurants here…yet, just like you don’t have a 99-cent store.
Wanna trade?

Tom, if only I had the power to make that trade happen!! Do you shop the 99 cent Only Stores? Is it as amazing as some say?

I do go to them on occasion. Unfortunately for me, I live in a little more upscale area than what their target market is.
But, when I happen to zip through a neighborhood and see one, I almost always pull over and buy certain specific things that are the best value on the planet (in particular, gnocchi).
There was an article in the L.A. Times Magazine back in 2002 that talked about 99-Cent stores, and the really cool stuff you can get there, such as designer throw away plates; I’m serious! They noted that there was even the occasional Rolls Royce in the parking lot up at one in a more, upscale L.A. location where the “rich” were buying this stuff/shopping there. But seriously, these 99-Cent stores are the cream of the crop of the “cheepos,” and really have some great deals that are worth zipping in and checking out.
Thoughts/questions? Let me know, and yes, tell Emeril we’ll trade a 99-Cent store for a restaurant!
