The Fried Apple Pie is Back!
Post Author: Jenny McCoyBut, this time it has taken on a new form–apple fritters!
I am always excited that fried pastries are often found on the dessert menus in New Orleans’ restaurants. Just the other night, I had a perfect version of what tasted like a fast food apple pie, you know, back in the day, when they used to fry them!
The dessert was made of three thick slices of fresh Pink Lady apple, battered and deep fried. The batter was light, crispy, and slightly sweet, reminding me of Japanese tempura. It was perfect because it did not overwhelm the fresh flavor of the sweet apples, which were fried until tender, but not mushy. Served with a scoop of Creole cream cheese ice cream and a bit of caramel sauce, it was a nice way to finish my meal and totally brought me back to my childhood.
