pomegranate
Post Author: Lorin GaudinIt’s a fruit with the color of a sunset, yet its skin is leathery and on the whole, it is oddly shaped. What is this fruit - a pomegranate and the season is now.
Bearing an ancient history, the pomegranate is revered by many cultures and religions as a sacred symbol of fertility. It was also a beloved edible fruit and used medicinally by herbalists to treat inflammation, such as sore throats and rheumatism.
The ancient Romans called it the “apple of many seeds” for the number of jewel-like seeds hidden beneath that queer veneer. Botanically, the fruit is a large berry, although the word “pomegranate” is derived from Middle French “pomme garnete” which literally means “seeded apple.”
